Brian Laws takes his Burnley side to Championship strugglers Reading searching for his first win in charge of the Lancashire side.

Chris McCann returns from a four-month lay-off to replace the injured Stephen Jordan at left-back, while Joey Gudjonsson comes in to the side to replace David Nugent, who has returned to Portsmouth.

Frederic Nimani is not eligible to play despite signing on loan yesterday so Steven Thompson starts up front at the venue he sealed Burnley’s place at Wembley in May without a stunning lobbed volley.

Steven Fletcher is not risked after taking a whack to the ankle at Old Trafford, while Jay Rodriguez and Martin Paterson continue their steps to a first-team return with places on the bench.

Clarke Carlisle is fit only to be selected as a substitute with David Edgar and Michael Duff continuing their partnership at the back. Captain Steven Caldwell is still out with a groin strain.

Reading line up with former Clarets foe Gregorz Rasiak at the heart of their attack and with Liverpool target Adam Federici in goal. Jobi McAnuff starts on the wing after almost scoring a wonder goal in the last round.

Reading beat Liverpool at Anfield in a 3rd round replay, caretaker manager Brian McDermott’s only win in charge, to get to this stage, while Burnley won at Milton Keynes Dons in Owen Coyle’s last game at the club.

Under Coyle, Burnley beat Reading three times last season without conceding a goal, including a 3-0 aggregate win in the play-off semi-finals. Former Reading player Andre Bikey is still on international duty at the African Nations Cup with Cameroon.
